Manually Start Windows 10 Upgrade

You’ve been patient, right?

July 29th came and went but you still don’t have Windows 10 on your Surface. How much longer is it going to be? Why is everyone else getting their upgrade but not you?

Patience is fine and good but, sometimes, you want results. Tim got his upgrade yesterday but I was still waiting on mine for the Surface 3 and, I have to admit, I ran out of patience. Sooo, I took action.

In this article, I’m going to cover how you, too, can manually start the Windows 10 upgrade on your Surface – right now.

This process will work even if you never reserved your copy of Windows 10, so long as, you have a Surface Pro (1/2/3) or Surface 3 tablet. Sorry, if you have a Surface RT or Surface 2, you have to wait until September when Microsoft releases Update 3 for Windows RT.

Manually Start Windows 10 Upgrade: How To Do It

First, check out this article (Before You Upgrade Surface to Windows 10 – Do These Things!). It outlines some steps you can take to make sure everything will go smoothly.

Next, after your Surface is ready to go, follow these steps:

  • Make sure your Surface is fully charged and plugged into power (especially if you have a Surface 3)
  • Go to this website: Download Windows 10
  • Tap the Download Tool Now (64-Bit Version) button (all Surface tablets are 64-bit)
  • After the download finishes, find and run the MediaCreationToolx64.exe file
  • When the Windows 10 Setup window appears, ensure Upgrade This PC Now is selected then tap Next

At this point, it will start the download process for the Windows 10 upgrade files. It will take a while and it will hammer your network; so, be patient – I know there is that “p” word again.

Once the files are downloaded, it will automatically start the Windows 10 upgrade process. The upgrade is pretty straight-forward and it guides you every step of the way, so you shouldn’t have any problems.

Once you get Windows 10 installed, you will want to follow the steps in this Surface.
